Bead & Needlework databases for
SmartList
To Go®
The databases below are for version 2.0 of
, which has been sold to DataViz and the new
name is SmartList To Go. If you have upgraded to the new product you should be
able to convert these if required or just read them as is. Sometime during the
summer of 2003 I will update them all to the latest version and get them in
sync with the most up-to-date thread lists (which I build for my needlework
shop's on-line catalog).
These tinyBytes/SmartLists contain beads and common
needlework supplies. These files will only work with the database for PalmOS,
which you can purchase from
DataViz.
These tinyBytes/SmartLists are free and you may share them with others who have
the Palm software. If you find any inaccuracies, please let me know. If you
have a database you'd like to place here for others to use, please feel free to
send me e-mail or let me know if you'd like a link placed here for your site.
You can find the tab separated lists of most of the threads on the
Thread Lists page.
I use thinkDB/SmartList To Go because I found it to
be the most flexible of the PalmOS databases I looked at and I liked how easy
it was to create input and display screens on my Handspring Visor.
Each database is set up with a pretty simple format
of Thread (list), Number (text or integer), Color (text) & Inventory
(checkbox) - and assigned to a Category. The Inventory field is used to
indicate whether you have it or not. The field Thread is a duplicate of the
Category. It's set up this way since if have the Category "All" selected, you
can't tell what type a thread is without going into each individual record.
When displaying the records you can choose either:

If a database only contains one thread type, the
display screens for (full) or By Thread will not be set up since
they are not needed. There are filters for what you Have vs. what you
Need so it's easy to do a shopping list. You could always add a column
for what you Want so that for the large lists in particular, you can keep track
of the colors you want to buy vs. what you might not have.
You are free to adapt any of these databases to what
works best for you. If you're surprised by the number of records in some of the
databases they are large because each Thread, Number, Color combination is a
unique record. For example, if DMC color 221 comes in Floss, Perle #3 and Perle
#5, there will be a record for each. I preferred to set it up this way vs. one
record with several checkboxes, since many colors don't actually span all the
thread types, but only a few. Having multiple checkboxes doesn't tell you
whether that color is in fact available in that Thread. So, if a record exists
in these databases, it means that color is available from the manufacturer in
the Thread/Category. It's a bit bigger, but more accurate. The exceptions to
this are the alternate Gumnuts databases.
Have fun doing your personal bead & thread
inventory!
